Who should attend?

Anyone who is new to the business of civil protection and wants to develop understanding of multi-agency approach to Integrated Emergency Management in the context of the Civil Contingencies Act (2004)

Course Aims

To give practitioners who are new to the business of civil protection a developed understanding of how multi-agency Integrated Emergency Management (IEM) is delivered in the UK

Objectives

By the end of the course, the delegate will be able to:

  • Identify challenges to multi-agency working in the context of civil protection and their practical solutions.
  • Explain the concept of IEM.
  • Explain the main features of the legislation and regulations that support IEM, and the structures designed for its delivery, with particular emphasis on the national Concept of Operations and LRF working practices.
  • Apply the UK civil protection model of risk assessment.
  • Evaluate their community risk register and identify ways of developing it, as a planning and prioritisation tool and as an instrument of public communication.
  • Design and apply a template for the design and creation of generic major incident plans and specific plans. 
  • Design a strategy to validate plans.
  • Explain the business continuity management life-cycle and carry out a preliminary business impact analysis.

Additional Notes

Each day would start and end with reflection and review of  personal learning goals  

Pre-course reading:  Selected guidance.

Overnight work: Required on four evenings to complete action planners, reflection notes and pre-reading for the next day.
  
Post-course work:  Course forum on iLearn will allow on-going interaction with tutors and fellow delegates.  Further reading will be signposted on this platform and the forum will be  used to reflect on it and evaluate it in discussion with tutors and peers.
 
End-of-course test:  Delegates would be given an option to sit a test at the end of the course to receive a certificate of  achievement

It is advised that delegates should bring their job description, initial project summaries for first 6 months
