Sharing practice and planning our next steps

 
This workshop, hosted by the Cabinet Office, will be of great interest to public, voluntary and  private sector practitioners in the resilience arena. It is a chance to be updated on both  national and international policy and practice, hear the views of specialists in the field and  share lessons from recent events. There will also be the chance for delegates to discuss  their own experiences, challenges and opportunities as well as influencing future research and direction in this vital aspect of our emergency preparedness work.

16.15 Welcome and Emergency Planning College Update – Ken Lawson, EPC
The Reflective Practitioner – Eve Coles introduces the Emergency
Management Review, the new peer reviewed journal for the emergency management community.
 
16.35 Listening and Hearing:  
Nejla Sabberton will update delegates on the Cabinet Office Community
Resilience principles work so far and the next steps: including priorities in
2012, the use of the EPC “Knowledge Hub” and rewarding and recognising
community resilience work.
 
17.00 Community Resilience: The Challenges
Delegates will be invited to discuss their concerns, challenges and
initiatives in relation to their Community Resilience work.

Resilient Communities: How did we get here? Dr Anne Eyre
Anne Eyre will review links between the themes of resilience, community
and disaster and the broader context for understanding today’s community
resilience agenda.

9.20 The Whole Community Approach
 Bob Bach, Department of Homeland Security will introduce his work on the
“Whole Community Approach” in the USA.  This will also include a question
and answer session and an opportunity for delegates to comment.

11.00 Resilient together: 
Assistance centres in Communities
Andrew Meek of Haringey Council will discuss the work of the Assistance
Centre established after civil disorder in 2011.

13.00 What’s your story?
Delegates will be invited to share their own stories and feedback with
regard to talking about risk and emergency preparedness with
communities. Delegates are asked to bring examples of their own case
studies.

 “Careless talk”: Risk Messages and Communities
Ian Cameron, a Crisis Communications specialist and Alastair Wilson of
Emergency Media and Public Affairs, Australia will talk about social media
and community resilience.
 
Practitioners will also present recent challenges they have encountered
during community resilience work. 
 
The session will conclude with a presentation by Brooke Rogers examining
the way that risk messages around chemical and radiological threats are
communicated to communities.
